Electric Blanket Test Results 2005
The Trading Standards Service, in partnership with
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, invited residents
of the Borough to have their electric blankets tested
free of charge. The findings have revealed that 23% of the blankets failed the tests and were deemed unsafe
to use.
Test Results
- 77% Correct
- 23% Failed and had to
be destroyed
The main reasons for many of the blankets failing
were faulted or exposed elements and incorrect wiring.
Whilst it is mainly elderly people who bring in their
blankets for testing, the Council believes it is essential
that all residents check their blankets regularly for
damage or faults. The safety checks formed part of
the Council's Safer South Tyneside campaign.
Councillor Joanne Bell, Lead Member for Safer and
Stronger Communities, said: "Unsafe electrical
products are still considered a major cause of house
fires and once again this initiative has highlighted
the dangers that may be present in residents' homes.
Whilst the proportion of blankets failing the tests
has reduced since the last checks, it is still too
high.
"It is vital residents check their electric blankets
regularly for damage or faults to ensure they are still
safe to use.
Watch Manager Ray Houghton, from Tyne and Wear Fire
and Rescue Service, said: "The results of this
year's safety campaign were dramatic with nearly a
quarter of all electric blankets tested in the District
being identified as potential fire risks."
He added: "As a general guide, people should
have their electric blankets tested every year and
any that are more than 10 years old should be replaced.
Faulty blankets can be responsible for devastating
household fires and this year's failure rate of 23
per cent brings that risk into sharp focus."
