Council Prosecutes After Underage Alcohol Sale
South Tyneside Council's Trading Standards Service
is continuing its fight against the sale of alcohol
to underage children with another successful prosecution.
The defendant, Dorothy Linney, of The Wine Shop in
Prince Edward Road, South Shields, appeared at South
Tyneside Magistrates' Court.
Linney pleaded guilty to one offence of selling alcohol
to a person under the age of 18, contrary to the Licensing
Act 1964. She was fined £200 and ordered to pay
£200 costs.
Prosecutions such as this have increased thanks to
the adoption of a joint working partnership arrangement
between Trading Standards and Northumbria Police, which
includes joint exercises relating to off licences in
the Borough.
Councillor Michael Clare, Lead Member for Neighbourhood
Services, said: "The Council is determined to do
all it can to eradicate alcohol related youth disorder.
This is another case, with others pending, demonstrating
the firm line we will take against retailers who sell
alcohol illegally to children."
Anyone with information of anyone selling alcohol illegally
to children should contact the confidential hotline
number 0800 093 5878.
