Roadshow Marks New Respect Status |
25 Jan 2007 |
People in Hebburn turned out in force to attend a
community safety event on the day the Borough's new
Respect action area status was unveiled.
The Safer South Tyneside Roadshow, held at the Hastings
Club on the Lukes Lane on Monday (January 22) pulled
in around 100 visitors.
The event coincided with the announcement that South
Tyneside is to be one of 40 Respect action areas in
England and Wales, bringing extra funding to promote
a culture of respect and tackle anti-social behaviour.
It will also build on the Safer South Tyneside campaign,
which sees the Council and Northumbria Police working
together to fight crime and disorder.
Monkton ward councillor, Alan Kerr, added: "It
was great to see so many people turn up at the event.
The roadshow gave people the chance to come and discuss
any concerns they have, whilst the Council and its
partners could talk to people about the work they are
doing to improve community safety - it really was a
two way process.
"I was also pleased to see that many of those
who came along were enthusiastic enough to complete
questionnaires. It will be interesting to have a look
at the comments received before considering how we
can best respond to them."
Councillor Nancy Maxwell, who chaired the Borough's
recent anti-social behaviour commission, also attended
the event.
She said: "The Respect agenda is very broad,
but tackling anti-social behaviour is an important
part of it and remains one of our top priorities. There
is a great deal of good work taking place to put a
stop to the problem, and we have made it clear that
we will not tolerate behaviour of a few that blights
the quality of life of others.
"The anti-social behaviour commission gave members
a chance to have a close look at the issue, and several
of the commission's recommendations are already being
implemented. The Respect action area status is just
going to give us more resources and fresh impetus to
sort the problem out."
Among those represented on the day were the Council's
Anti-Social Behaviour, Trading Standards and Community
Safety teams, as well as Northumbria Police, South
Tyneside Homes and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.
The roadshow was organised as part of the Safer South
Tyneside initiative, which has seen Northumbria Police
and South Tyneside Council pledge to work together
more closely to fight crime at all levels in the Borough.
