Our Consumer Advice Centre

Our Consumer Advice Service holds the Community Legal Service Quality Mark (General Advice with Case Work) and is a member of the Stockton Consumer Support Network.

Each year we deal with around 9,000 complaints and enquiries as well as a large number of general enquiries. This web site provides information and advice 24 hours a day to help consumers solve their own problems.

Our Advice Officers provide advice on consumer civil law issues.

If you have a complaint, officers will advise you on your legal rights and the best way for you to resolve your problem. The advice service is provided free of charge to residents and businesses in the Stockton Council area, and to residents of other areas if they have encountered a problem within the Stockton Council area.

Our Advice Officers can:

Give impartial advise on the law and your rights

Suggest appropriate courses of action

Advise you how to pursue your rights

Advise on court procedure

Pass on information to our Enforcement Team if criminal law has been contravened and it is appropriate to do so.

Our Advice Officers cannot:

Close businesses down

Automatically obtain a refund for you

Recommend a business to you

Tell you which businesses to avoid.

Scams

Scams take a wide variety of forms and they target both consumers and businesses. Although there are some generic forms of scam, new variations appear regularly to evade enforcement or exploit new opportunities.

The best defence to scams is a high level of awareness and a healthy scepticism of all offers that appear to be to good to be true.
