About Us

Trading Standards is a Telford & Wrekin Council service which plays a key role in consumer protection and which acts as a link between consumers and businesses where there are problems with faulty or dangerous goods or substandard services. We achieve this through:

  • Information
  • Advice
  • Education
  • Testing good and services
  • Sampling
  • Inspection of business premises
  • Monitoring business practices
  • Enacting enforcement action

The Trading Standards service is responsible for administering a wide range of legislation, which provides protection for consumers and traders. Protection especially relating to "Quality, Quantity, Credit, Prices and Safety". Trading Standards is a consumer law enforcement body whose duties are mainly based around statutory responsibilities.

What we can and cannot do

WE CAN:

-give impartial advice on consumer law and your rights
-suggest action you can take
-advise on civil court procedure
-investigate if the criminal law has been breached

WE CANNOT:

-close businesses down
-automatically obtain a refund for you
-recommend businesses
-take action when the criminal law has not been broken
-tell you which businesses to avoid

Priorities

Trading Standards - Our Vision

Trading Standards is a Telford & Wrekin Council service which plays a key role in consumer protection and which acts as a link between consumers and businesses where there are problems with faulty or dangerous goods or substandard services.

  • To protect local businesses and consumers by ensuring fair competition within the business community.
  • To promote greater awareness of consumer protection and Trading Standards in the community.
  • To ensure that the information that businesses and consumers rely on to support their purchasing decisions is accurate and complete.
  • To protect local businesses and consumers from the supply of substandard, falsely described and mispriced goods and services.
  • To ensure that only goods and services which are safe are supplied or manufactured in the area.
  • To ensure high standards of animal health and welfare in the keeping, transportation and handling of livestock, and to maintain an effective animal movement licence regime.
  • To protect the young people of the area.
  • To maintain effective licensing and enforcement regimes in respect of the storage of petroleum and explosives.

Weights and Measures

Trading Standards is responsible for ensuring that all weighing and measuring equipment that is used to determine the quantity of goods being sold is accurate and used correctly.

We are also responsible for investigating any incidents involving the supply of short weight or measure goods.

We do this by:

  • Use of high accuracy weighing and measuring equipment against which all trade equipment is tested.
  • Checking the accuracy and suitability of trade equipment prior to its use for trade.
  • Testing equipment used in shops, petrol stations, factories etc.
  • Checking pre-packed goods for correct quantity and labelling.
  • Investigating complaints.
  • Calibrating industrial equipment
