Footwear Labelling Footwear (Indication of Composition) Regulations 1995 The Regulations apply to all footwear that is designed to protect and cover the foot, except second hand, protective and toy footwear. Labelling requirements Footwear must be labelled with an indication of the main material from which the upper, lining and sock and outer sole are made, in the form of either pictograms (ie symbols) or words. If pictograms are used, a notice must be displayed to explain to customers what the symbols mean. The notice must be large enough so the information can be seen and understood. The label should be attached to at least one shoe per pair. It may be on the packaging, but must also appear on the shoe itself. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer or importer to ensure the labelling is applied to footwear and the markings are not misleading. It is the responsibility of the retailer, to ensure that shoes they sell are labelled in accordance with the Regulations and the explanatory notices for pictograms are displayed. Retailers can get information about the composition from manufacturers and importers. Internet and mail order traders are also required to ensure that consumers are supplied with information as to the meaning of pictograms, where the shoes they sell are labelled with pictograms. Guidance on the regulations can be found at www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/pdf1/footware.pdf Please Note This leaflet is not an authoritative interpretation of the law and is intended only for guidance.
