The DTI is involved with several initiatives to help businesses exploit the immense potential of the information age. One example is given below but for more information visit www.dti.gov.uk/insight_information_age.html. Internet Mentoring Initiative. This is designed to create an environment which nurtures new and emerging Internet companies. It will help Internet entrepreneurs to turn their business ideas into successful, viable enterprises. It will help those traditional firms who want to make the Internet their primary means of doing business. The initiative is made up of three elements, each of which is being run by an external contractor: Web Portal "Beyond Bricks". This is a resource for new Internet companies, and companies making the transition to an Internet-based business model. It provides news, features, advice and information targeted for the specific needs of companies for whom the Internet is, or is intended to become, their primary route to market. Amongst other services, it includes self-diagnostic tools to enable users to identify their needs. It offers guidance on business plans, skills and training, and accessing venture capital. Internet Incubator Fund. This was launched in order to stimulate the creation of a number of regional incubators, who will germinate and nurture new Internet companies. The incubators will provide services unique to the needs of these companies. If you are an Internet entrepreneur who is interested in taking advantage of a successful incubator in your region please contact UK Business Incubation (UKBI), who will be happy to help you. Market Data Scoping Study. This brings together existing data on market conditions for Internet companies and identifies those areas where further research is required. This information enables Internet businesses to better understand their market, and helps government to know when and where to offer support and guidance. The study can be downloaded from the Resources area of the Beyond Bricks website.
