Help Us To Stop Underage Sales
Volunteers aged between 13 and 16 are required to help Trading Standards Officers enforce legislation relating to the under age sales of age-restricted products such as cigarettes, alcohol and fireworks.
Test Purchase exercises are the most effective way Trading Standards can check to ensure traders are not illegally selling goods to under age children and teenagers.
Under age volunteers, working with Trading Standards Officers, visit retailer's premises and attempt to buy age-restricted goods. If a sale is made to the volunteer, Trading Standards Officers will wait until the volunteer has left the premises, and then identify themselves to the retailer. Rigorous Home Office guidelines are followed to ensure the safety and well being of the volunteers.
Volunteers must be representative of their age (i.e. there should be no possibility that they could be thought to be over 16 years old for tobacco, or 18 years old for alcohol) and freely willing to participate, with the permission of their parents or guardian.
If you, or someone you know, would like to help Trading Standards during occasional school holidays, weekends, or evenings, please contact us for further details. You can telephone (0151) 666 5202, email us or write to us at:
