Young Consumers logo   Young Consumers - 2009 Competition

This fun and challenging competition complements the introduction of CITIZENSHIP into the English National curriculum.

The rounds test the student's knowledge of money, credit and finance, consumer law and affairs, food and health, safety and the environment and Europe and travel. In fact, it arms young people with the information to make right decisions and become a powerful force for changing and shaping markets.

Do you think your students could answer questions like:

Q. Which OFT looks after price fixing in the UK ?
ANS. Office of Fair Trading

Q. If you buy a shirt labeled 100% silk and then find that it is 50% Polyester, what criminal law has been broken?
ANS. Trade Descriptions Act 1968.

Q. Which Government Department is responsible for collecting Income Tax?
ANS. Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

The competition supports consumer education and encourages the exploration of the skills, attitudes and knowledge and understanding necessary to become an effective consumer - all a pre-requisite for active citizenship and full participation within society.
